The Great Divorce

HEAR
1.  After hearing the message, spend some time in your group sharing what you recall from it.  What struck you, and what questions did it leave you with?

2.  Read Matthew 5:27-32
What word, phrase, or verse stands out to you and why?

TALK
3.  Discuss the hopeful statistics that Josh gave around marriage and divorce.  Are you surprised by these numbers?  Do they challenge your assumptions?

4.  Jesus hates divorce, yet he equates it with everyone who has ever lusted outside of marriage, making most people, including singles, the equivalent of adulterers.  Why do you think he feels this way, and how are you included?

5.  Like last week’s sermon on violence, God is always pointing us to the ideal, yet he accommodates us when we miss the mark.  Do you agree with this statement, and have you seen God work this way in your life?

LIVE
7.  Divorce is the result of sin, yet an abusive marriage can grieve God more.  Is this acceptable for you?  Were you aware that God divorced Israel?

8,  If you are in a reasonably good marriage free from abuse, neglect, and adultery, take divorce off the table as an option.

9.  If you are married, be proactive and work on your marriage and seek help if you need it.  If you are single, remember that Jesus holds you to the same standard of fidelity, and remember that singleness is a biblical calling.

PRAY
Lord Jesus, thank you for always pointing us to your perfect standard, and for always walking alongside us when we fall short of it.  Help us to grow, and empower us to pick up those who have fallen.
